Who is Jacinda Ardern?

Jacinda Ardern is a politician from New Zealand. She was born in Hamilton, New Zealand on 26th July 1980. In October 2017, she became the country's youngest prime minister (whoa!) in more than 150 years.

At the age of 17, she joined the Labour Party. Later, she was appointed to the staff of Helen Clark, New Zealand's second female prime minister and Ardern's political hero and mentor. She became the deputy leader (the second highest position) of the Labour Party in 2017.

After a few months, Labour leader Andrew Little resigned, and Ardern was elected leader of the Labour Party. She went on to become the 40th Prime Minister of New Zealand. She held the post for the last few years but recently resigned.

Jacinda Ardern's announcement surprised everyone. Ardern said that she is not the best person to lead the country right now. She said that she does not have the energy to continue as prime minister anymore. Her time as Prime Minister will end on 7th February 2023.

How was Jacinda Ardern's term as Prime Minister?

She has led the country through the COVID-19 pandemic, a terror attack on two Christchurch mosques, and a volcanic eruption on White Island. During the pandemic, New Zealand imposed one of the toughest laws, preventing anyone from entering the country.

Her leadership was also praised during the 2019 Christchurch terror attack. She quickly passed gun control laws and wore a hijab to show her support for the Muslim community.

Her government also passed laws to fight climate change and child poverty. She quickly became one of New Zealand's and the world's most popular politicians.
