<h5>Did you know? Cockroaches are pretty cool!</h5>  <p>Cockroaches, commonly known as roaches, are one of the oldest living insects. They have also been found in fossils dating back more than 320 million years. The ancestors of today's cockroaches were present on Earth 125 to 140 million years ago. Cockroaches eat various things ranging from paper, clothes, food, dead insects, etc.
You must have heard that cockroaches can even survive nuclear blasts. This story became popular after the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. People claimed that cockroaches were the sole survivors among the ruins of Japan's destroyed towns.
As exciting as this story is, it isn’t true. What is true is that cockroaches are extremely durable and can even endure intense radiation. But cockroaches are not immune to heat (which blasts produce quite a bit of!). 
Cockroaches are truly fascinating creatures and just recently, Japanese scientists created cyborg cockroaches.</p> <h5>What is a cyborg cockroach?</h5>  <p>Japanese scientists took Madagascar cockroaches (a type of cockroach) and created cyborgs! To turn regular cockroaches into cyborgs, they attached a small wireless control module to the insects. This module is powered by a tiny battery pack, which can be recharged using a solar cell.</p>
<p>As you can imagine, attaching gadgets to such a small insect is not very easy. So they used a specially designed backpack to connect the wireless leg-control module and battery to the top of the insect's body. An adhesive was also used so that the gadgets do not fall off.
Once the gadgets were attached, the cyborg cockroaches were tested. Scientists used the wireless remote control to turn the insects left and right. The findings were published in the scientific journal called ‘npj Flexible Electronics’ by a team of scientists at the RIKEN Cluster for Pioneering Research (CPR). </p> <h5>Awesome! How can cyborg cockroaches help?</h5>  <p>Scientists have been attempting to create cyborg insects to aid in inspecting dangerous areas and monitoring the environment of such areas. The cyborg cockroaches can be used to help carry out search and rescue activities. As they would be fitted with solar-powered batteries, they will not be required to return after a certain time to get charged. Thus, this would not hinder rescue operations. 
Also, cyborg cockroaches may be equipped with a microphone to catch sound coming from any direction. This can help in rescue operations during earthquakes, building collapses, etc. as sound can be helped to identify and locate survivors (the survivors can call for help).
</p> <h5>What are the drawbacks of cyborg cockroaches?</h5>  <p>Everything has its advantages and disadvantages. Cockroaches are small insects and someone can step on them accidentally. This will also destroy the gadgets. The attached gadgets might also fall off. If the battery stops working due to a fault, it will be difficult to control the cockroaches. Additionally, these cyborg insects could also be used to illegally spy on people.
