What is the MTV VMAs?
The MTV VMAs, or MTV Video Music Awards, is a yearly award show to recognise outstanding achievements in the music entertainment and music video industries. The television network Music Television, or MTV, gives the award. It was first held in 1984.
Awards are given in different categories. This year's show was held on 12th September 2023 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, USA. Nicki Minaj was the host, and BTS’s Jungkook won an award at this event.
In which category did Jungkook win?
Jungkook won an award for his song "Seven" in the "Song of Summer" category. Sixteen songs were nominated in this category. He's the first male K-Pop soloist to win a VMA. Sadly, Jungkook didn’t attend the award show.
All the BTS fans (also called ARMY) are very happy for him. The song “Seven” has created two world records. It became the most streamed song by a male singer on Spotify in just one week. It also became the fastest song by a male singer to get 100 million streams on Spotify.
Were there other K-Pop winners at this year’s VMAs?
Stray Kids, a K-pop band, won in the best K-pop category for their song “S-Class.” Blackpink was nominated for the 'Show of the Summer' category, but they didn't win. Still, Blackpink's fans (called Blinks) are happy because the group won the “Group of the Year” and “Best Choreography” awards.
