<h5>Who has been sworn in as the 50th Chief Justice of India?</h5>  <p>Justice Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud (DY Chandrachud) was appointed the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI) on 9th November 2022. Justice Chandrachud will serve as the CJI for two years, until 10th November 2024, the day before he turns 65 (the CJI retires at the age of 65).</p>

He succeeded Justice Uday Umesh Lalit (UU Lalit), who served as the 49th CJI. Former CJI UU Lalit recommended Justice DY Chandrachud’s name as his successor. As per the rule, the retiring CJI names their successor.</p> <h5>What do we know about Justice DY Chandrachud?</h5> <figure>

      </figure> <p>Justice DY Chandrachud was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra on 11th November 1959.  Justice Chandrachud completed his education in economics at St Stephen's College, New Delhi. In 1982, he completed his education in law at Delhi University.
In 1986, he completed his higher studies in law at Harvard Law School in the United States of America (USA). After finishing his studies at Harvard, Justice Chandrachud practised law at the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court of India.
He was appointed as a permanent judge of the Bombay High Court in 2000. In 2013, he became the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. He held this position until his appointment to the Supreme Court in 2016.
CJI Chandrachud comes from a family of lawyers and judges. His father, Justice Yeshwant Vishnu Chandrachud, was the 16th and the country’s longest-serving CJI.</p> <h5>What are people’s views about this appointment?</h5> <figure>

      </figure> <p>Before being appointed as the CJI, DY Chandrachud was a part of several important decisions of the Supreme Court, including rulings on the Ayodhya land dispute and the right to privacy. He is regarded as a progressive and liberal judge in the country. Many regard his appointment as an important event that can be good for the country.</p> <h5>What does the Chief Justice of India do?</h5>  <p>Similar to your school’s principal, the CJI is the head of the Supreme Court and India's judiciary. As CJI, the person is in charge of allocating cases and appointing other judges to deal with important issues related to the law.
