British Climber Creates History
On May 18, 2025, a man named Kenton Cool did something amazing. He climbed Mount Everest for the 19th time! That’s more than any non-Sherpa climber has ever done.
He was not alone. A Sherpa from Nepal named Dorji Gyaljen climbed with him. This was Dorji’s 23rd time at the top!
What Is Mountaineering?
Mountaineering means climbing very tall mountains. It is full of adventure, but it can also be very dangerous.
Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world. It is very cold and windy. The higher you go, the harder it is to breathe. Climbers must train for a long time and wear special clothes, and use tools to stay safe.
Mountaineering as a Sport
Mountaineering is not just an adventure, it is also a sport. Some climbers try to break records, like climbing the most peaks, reaching the top without oxygen, or doing it the fastest.
While some climb for fun, others take part in national or international challenges. But even in a sport like this, safety and care for nature are always the most important.
How Do Climbers Reach the Top?
Climbing Mount Everest is done step by step. Each stage helps the climbers get used to the cold and thin air.
The climb begins at Base Camp (5,364 m), where they plan and adjust to less oxygen.
Next is Camp 1, where the ice has deep cracks and big ice towers that can fall.
Then comes Camp 2, in a quiet valley surrounded by ice cliffs.
Camp 3 is on a steep icy wall called the Lhotse Face. Even expert climbers find this part hard.
Camp 4, also called the South Col, is in the “death zone” with very little oxygen.
From there, climbers leave at night to reach the top by morning and come down quickly.
How Did Kenton Do It?
Kenton Cool first climbed Everest in 2004. This time, he had help from a Sherpa guide. Sherpas help other climbers stay safe. Kenton says Sherpas are the true heroes of Everest.
What Can We Learn?
Climbing big mountains is exciting, but it is also risky. Kenton’s story teaches us that big dreams need big effort, and that teamwork and training are the keys to reaching great heights.
