What’s the current diplomatic situation between India and Canada?

A few months back, Canada said India was involved in the death of a Khalistani leader in Canada. But India's Ministry of External Affairs denied this. Since then, things have gotten worse between both countries. They both removed diplomats from each other's countries.

In November 2023, it came out that an Indian official tried to hurt another Khalistani in New York as part of a bigger plan to target Khalistanis in Canada and the US. This made things even worse between the two countries.

India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, said Canada let Khalistanis do things in their country, hurting India-Canada relations. Now, Canada's recent decision might make things even worse.

What’s the recent decision taken by Canada?

In September 2023, the Canadian government established an independent commission to investigate if other countries were trying to interfere in Canadian affairs. They did this because there were reports that China might be trying to influence Canadian elections. The group is looking at China, Russia, etc.

Recently, this commission asked the Canadian government for details to see if India might have tried interfering with Canada's elections in 2019 and 2021. This new problem could make India and Canada's already rocky relationship even worse.

What is India’s response to this latest issue?

At the time of writing this, India hasn't said anything about the commission's decision. But let's hope both countries can solve their problems and stay friends. Good diplomatic relationships with other countries are essential for maintaining peace.
