<h3><strong>What consensus has been agreed at COP28?</strong></h3><p>The 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) was held in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It has recently ended. During COP28, an agreement named "The UAE Consensus" was agreed upon by 198 participating Parties.</p><p>With this historic agreement, the parties have established an ambitious climate agenda targeted at maintaining the aim of limiting global warming to 1.5°C within reach. The parties want to control the effects of climate change and are now uniting to take the required steps.</p><h3><strong>What does the consensus say?</strong></h3><p>The consensus has urged the involved parties to shift away from all fossil fuels to achieve net zero by 2050. Parties have also been asked to take considerable steps for the upcoming Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by supporting various emission reduction targets.</p><p>NDC is a plan for reducing emissions and responding to the effects of climate change. Each party to the Paris Agreement is bound to develop and update an NDC every five years. The consensus has set a target of tripling renewables and doubling energy efficiency by 2030.</p><p>The consensus has also recognised the need for monetary increases to adapt to environmental changes to fulfil urgent and changing demands. Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed, President of the UAE, announced the formation of a $30 billion climate fund named ALTÉRRA for global climate solutions.</p><p>The $30 billion will be divided as follows: $25 billion will be used for climate plans, and $5 billion will be set aside to encourage investments in the Global South. There are also plans to raise $250 billion in capital by the decade's end.</p><p>The 'COP28 UAE Declaration on Climate and Health' has also been agreed upon and supported by 144 countries. It aims to accelerate the creation of sustainable, climate-resilient, and equitable health systems.</p><p>The ‘COP28 UAE Declaration on Agriculture, Food, &amp; Climate’ has received the support of 158 countries. It seeks to ensure that sustainable farming and food systems are linked with climate change responses. These are some other major decisions taken at COP28.
