Peter Higgs- a scientific legend!
Peter Higgs was a famous physicist from the United Kingdom (UK). He was also a professor at the University of Edinburgh and a Nobel-winning scientist whose work helped us understand the universe better.
He suggested the existence of the Higgs boson, or 'god particle,' in 1964.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was used to confirm its existence in 2012. Higgs won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013 for suggesting the particle's existence.
He passed away on 8th April 2024 at the age of 94. The scientific community remembers Professor Higgs as a great teacher who inspired many young scientists.
What is the Higgs boson?
When the universe began, particles had no mass and moved around quickly. Later, they gained some mass and became heavier. This caused gravity to pull them closer, joining them to form stars and planets.
The Higgs boson is a small particle that gives other particles mass. Just like a magic spell that changes the weight of an object. Finding this particle helped us understand why everything in the universe has weight.
It is also known as the 'god particle' because particles would be weightless without it, and life as we know would not exist.

The Large Hadron Collider helped prove that the Higgs boson is real. It’s a particle accelerator that scientists use to study the tiny particles that make up our entire universe.
