About Mariyappan Thangavelu
Mariyappan Thangavelu is from Tamil Nadu. His father left him and his mother when he was young. At five years of age, he suffered a permanent disability in his right leg due to a bus accident.
He used to help support his family by taking up small jobs. However, he never lost hope and took up athletics in school.
Soon, he grew up to win medals for India at various competitions. He has also won the Padma Shri Award.
His achievements show that we can achieve our dreams with hard work and dedication.
About World Para Athletics Championships.
It's a track and field event for para-athletes organised by the International Paralympic Committee. It was first held in Germany in 1994.
The 2024 Para Athletics World Championships was held from 17 to 25th May 2024 in Kobe, Japan.
While writing this, China was ranked first in this year’s tournament with 48 medals (18 gold, 16 silver, 14 bronze). They were followed by Brazil with 30 medals (17 gold, 8 silver, 5 bronze) and India with 12 medals (5 gold, 4 silver, 3 bronze).
