What is a cyber attack?
A cyber attack is any attempt by a hacker to gain access to a computer or computer network without permission.
It is usually done to delete, steal, manipulate or damage data. There are many kinds of cyber attacks, such as malware, man-in-the-middle attack, etc.
Why do cyber attacks happen?
Cyber attacks happen for a variety of reasons. While some people make money through it, others use it to take revenge. In recent years, many governments have launched cyber attacks against enemy nations.
Since almost everyone uses computers and mobile phones, frequent cyber attacks are becoming a serious threat to countries all over the world.
What is the QUAD?
The QUAD or Quadrilateral Security Dialogue is a forum with four member nations – the USA, Australia, Japan, and India. It discusses and cooperates on issues like cyber security, climate change, disaster management, education etc.
Recently, QUAD members have jointly agreed to fight the problem of cyber attacks. They are especially against attacks that affect critical infrastructure, for example, telecom networks, electricity distribution networks, etc.
What is India’s experience with cyber attacks?

According to a report, India faces around 1.8 crore cyber attack threats per year and 2 lakh threats per day. Many businesses have lost large amounts of customer data and suffered huge losses due to ransomware attacks.
In 2020, some Chinese groups launched a malware attack on Maharashtra’s power grid. They caused a power outage and affected the functioning of trains, hospitals, people working from home, etc.
How can we protect ourselves from cyber-attacks?
The Government of India has set up many bodies to look after cyber security issues, such as CERT-In, Cyber Swachchta Kendra, etc.
We can also keep ourselves safe by keeping strong passwords, regularly updating our systems, installing antivirus software, and avoiding sharing sensitive information on the internet.
