What is Taragiri?
‘Taragiri’ is the name of a stealth frigate that was launched on 11th September 2022. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. (MDL) made this frigate. Taragiri has been built as a part of Project 17A (we will read more about this). The Indian Navy is expected to receive this ship in August 2025.
The ship is 149 metres long and 17.8 metres wide and its launch weight is estimated to be 3510 tonnes (35,10,000 kilograms). The Indian Navy's Bureau of Naval Design has designed this frigate.
Can you tell me more about the equipment on Taragiri?
The ship will be driven by two gas turbines and two diesel engines and it will be able to reach a speed of over 28 knots. The ship will also have the most advanced weapons, sensors, living spaces, a power distribution system, etc.
It will also have a supersonic surface-to-surface missile system. The ship will have two rapid-fire guns and a super rapid gun mount (SRGM). Anti-submarine and anti-aircraft weapons will also be installed on the ship.

So, what is Project 17A?
In 2019, the Indian Navy launched Project 17 Alpha Frigates (P-17A). This project was launched to build stealth guided-missile frigates that cannot be easily seen or heard by enemies.
Project 17A's total cost is expected to be around Rs 25,700 crores.
How important is Project 17A to India?
Project 17A is important to the nation because it aims to build more stealth frigates for the Indian Navy. The Indian Navy is in charge of defending the Indian Ocean region, and stealth frigates can help them. Stealth frigates also help the nation’s defence against neighbouring nations such as Pakistan and China (we’re not exactly friendly with them). If our country has a strong Navy, it can maintain peace and protect itself from any threats.
