Sharks with drugs?

Cocaine is a really bad and illegal drug. It makes people feel super energetic and excited, but it’s also very harmful and addictive. Using this drug can harm someone’s health a lot, and even cause death.

If someone is caught with cocaine, they can go to jail or have to pay fines. However, some people still use and sell it.

But did you know that cocaine can even affect animals? In the waters near Brazil, some sharks have been found with cocaine in their bodies!

Scientists looked at some sharpnose sharks and found that they had high amounts of cocaine in their muscles and livers. That’s pretty scary!

How are sharks getting cocaine?!

Sharks are not sneaking around to get cocaine illegally! Scientists are trying to figure out how cocaine ended up in sharks. They have some theories:

  1. Contaminated Water: They think the cocaine might have come from contaminated water. This could happen if drug factories or people using drugs put their waste into the ocean.
  2. Drug Smugglers: Sometimes, people who smuggle cocaine might throw them into the ocean to hide them. The sharks might have eaten some of these drugs by mistake.

These are just ideas, and we don’t know for sure yet.

How can cocaine affect the sharks?

Scientists think that too much cocaine can make sharks sick. However, they don’t know exactly how it affects sharks' behaviour.

They say cocaine also harms their eyesight. This could make it hard for them to find food. It can also shorten their lives.

To protect sea animals, it’s important to keep cocaine out of the water. Officials must catch those dealing with this dangerous drug to protect our oceans, wildlife, and humans.
