Why did the Indian government share Partition photos?

The Press Information Bureau (PIB), a government organisation, has shared some old photos from the partition period on X (formerly known as Twitter). The images (from 1947) were shared, mentioning that everyone must remember the "horrors of the partition."

These pictures were posted on the occasion of the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.

What is the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day?

15th August 2023 is India’s 77th Independence Day. Various functions were held across the country to show the unity of our nation and celebrate our freedom. The day before, 14th August, is known as 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' or 'Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas.'

In 1947, the British divided India into India and Pakistan (West Pakistan and East Pakistan, which later became Bangladesh). During the partition, many people moved across the borders to go to whichever country they preferred.

During that time, there was a lot of fighting and confusion. Many people got hurt or died, and families got separated. Many families even had to leave their homes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi established this day in 2021 to honour those who died due to the nation being divided by the British.

This day helps us think about how hard it was for many Indians during the partition. It also reminds us to be kind to each other. We must learn from the mistakes of the past and not fight on the basis of religion, caste, etc.

This Independence Day, let us promise to live and grow in a peaceful, united society. Happy Independence Day!
