Magic lightning over the Himalayas!
NASA captured a dazzling image of gigantic jets, a special kind of lightning, shooting up from a thunderstorm over the Himalayas in China and Bhutan.
Imagine lightning bolts that shoot up towards the sky instead of down to the ground. It really looks like magic, just like in Harry Potter!
The photo captured by NASA.
Gigantic jets are rare and super cool. They stretch high into the sky, all the way to the ionosphere, which is close to the edge of space!
The picture taken by NASA shows four gigantic jets flashing in just a few minutes.
The photo taken is a composite image, which means it combines several photos taken over a short period to show these amazing jets of lightning in action.
What makes gigantic jets special?

Regular lightning usually strikes from cloud to cloud or cloud to ground. But gigantic jets are different. They go up, connecting thunderstorms with the upper layers of our atmosphere.
This special kind of lightning helps balance the electrical charges between the thunderstorm and the ionosphere.
Imagine a super tall ladder of electricity climbing up into the sky. The bottom part of these jets looks similar to another type of lightning called blue jets, and the top part looks like red sprites, which are colourful flashes in the upper atmosphere.
Scientists are still studying gigantic jets to understand how and why they form. Even if we don’t fully understand why and how gigantic jets occur, it’s still a very cool sight. Right?
