What were the voting results?
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) recently voted on the situation in war-torn Gaza. They passed a resolution asking for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, the release of hostages, and making sure help reaches those in need.
Out of the member states, 153 voted in favour, 10 against, and 23 did not vote. The UNGA decided to vote because many countries are telling Israel to stop its attacks on Gaza. Some groups are worried about the people in Gaza, but Israel says it won't stop fighting until it gets rid of Hamas. The trouble started when Hamas attacked Israel on 7th October 2023.
What was India’s stance during the vote?
India supported the ceasefire. India wants everyone in the world to work together to stop the ongoing war and fix the problems in that region.
Ten countries, including the United States, Israel, and Austria, voted against the resolution. Argentina, Ukraine, Germany, and the United Kingdom are some of the countries that refused to vote.
What are some reactions to this decision?
Palestine has said that people are supporting Palestine, and the USA can't ignore this support. According to them, the vote shows what people think about the situation. Israel didn't like the decision for a ceasefire.
The US government supports Israel's military campaign, saying it has the right to stop Hamas. But President Joe Biden mentioned that Israel is losing support worldwide because of its indiscriminate bombings in Gaza. Many are asking Hamas to stop fighting so the war and suffering can end.
It's important to know that UNGA resolutions cannot force countries to do something. They are important because they show the world's opinion on a situation, like Israel's military actions. Most countries of the world want the Israel-Palestine war to end. Now, it's up to Israel to decide what to do in the current situation.
