Which village residents have complained of polluted groundwater?

Residents of Ludhiana's Mangat village are having to drink black and filthy water that has been coming out of their hand pumps and tube wells. The people also say the drinking water from the taps is polluted.

They think a dyeing unit in the village is making the water dirty by putting waste into the open and ground. People in the past ten years have gotten sick from cancer, skin infections, and kidney problems because of this dirty water. They also have to use the dirty water for agricultural purposes.

Are the village members taking any action against the situation?

The villagers recently protested against the dyeing unit they believe is polluting the groundwater. They're unsure if anything will be done about it because the unit has been there for over ten years.

The villagers want tests done on the water to see if it's polluted, and they want an FIR filed against those responsible. In support, a public action committee has complained to the Central Pollution Control Board and other officials about the issue.

The committee also said that illegal dumping of industrial waste, including fly ash, is happening in Mangat's village pond. There have been inspections earlier.

What has been reported in previous inspections?

The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) checked the village before and found no problems causing the polluted groundwater. But now, a team from the PPCB will check again.

Let's hope the officials can find a solution to help the villagers. And the people responsible for the polluted water should be punished.
