What is the difference between sex and gender?
Sex is the difference between males and females seen at the time of birth. Gender is how a person feels inside their head (boy, girl, both or none). Sometimes, gender may not be the same as their sex. Gender expression is how a person shows their gender through their actions, clothes, or behaviour.
What does LGBTQ stand for?
LGBTQ stands for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer community. These words describe a person’s gender or who a person falls in love with.
A woman who loves other women is a lesbian. A man who loves other men is gay. Bisexual people love people of the same as well as the opposite gender. Transgenders are people whose gender is different from their sex. For example, a person who was born a man (sex) could choose to behave like a woman (gender). Queer people can belong to any or all genders.
Sometimes, people use the words gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer as a slur. Such behaviour is very disrespectful and may hurt the feelings of people who belong to the LGBTQ community. There is nothing wrong with being a part of this community. The people in the LGBTQ community, like all other humans, deserve respect and equal treatment.
Who is an ally of the community?
An ally is someone who is a friend and supporter of the LGBTQ community. Allies believe that the people of the community must be treated equally. Allies can offer their support to the LGBTQ community by asking questions and staying informed.
Love is love and many famous people from the LBGTQ community, like Alexander The Great, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Oscar Wilde and others, have changed the world. Like humans, animals such as dolphins, elephants, giraffes, lions, and penguins prove that loving someone of the same sex is completely natural.
