<h5>What is the history of India’s most important road?</h5>  <p>In Delhi lies a long leafy road lined with lawns, trees, and canals. This road is called Central Vista. It contains some iconic buildings of India like the Parliament House, Rashtrapati Bhavan, The National Archive, the India Gate War Memorial, etc. It’s here that the Republic Day parade is held each year. </p>

<p>Since Delhi is the capital of India, it is in this city that the Prime Minister, President, ministers, and top government officials oversee and administer the nation. And guess where they do it from? Yes, you’re right, they do so from the buildings on Central Vista (or at least, most of them do).</p>
<p>Central Vista was planned to be the site of the British Government when India was a British colony. But, once we gained independence, the Indian Government began functioning from here.
</p> <h5>Why is Central Vista in the news now?</h5>  <p>In 2019, the Modi Government announced that it would redevelop Central Vista to give a new identity to the ‘power corridor’ of India. This came to be known as the Central Vista Project (CV Project). Here are a few things that will be built under the CV Project:</p>
<p>(1) A brand new triangle-shaped Parliament building</p>
<p>(2) New houses for the Prime Minister and the Vice-President</p>
<p>(3) A new office for the Prime Minister</p>
<p>(4) A complete renovation of Central Vista Avenue</p>
<p>
(5) Chambers for the Members of Parliament</p>
<p>The budget for the CV Project is Rs. 20,000 crores. Of this, the new Parliament Building will cost Rs. 1,000 crores. The CV Project is due to be completed in 2024.
</p> <h5>Why are many people criticising the Central Vista Project?</h5>  <p>When the Government spent hundreds of crores of rupees for the CV Project in 2021, India was going through its worst phase of the COVID-19 crisis. Many citizens and members of the opposition argued that this money should be put aside for the health emergency that the country was facing.</p>

<p>Many of the old buildings on Central Vista will be demolished to make space for new ones. Quite a few historians think this will destroy the history and character of Central Vista and India will lose a unique piece of its heritage.</p>
<p>Central Vista was a valuable public place and popular tourist destination. Since the redevelopment is also moving more government homes and ministries into the space, the public won’t be able to roam around there like they used to. This has made many people unhappy. Environmental concerns have also been raised against the CV Project. 
</p> <h5>How is the Government responding to these criticisms?</h5>  <p>The Government has said that the existing Central Vista buildings are almost a hundred years old and are showing signs of great distress. There is also a need for more space for government offices as well.
Further, the Government has said that its spending on public healthcare has increased since the pandemic began and no money from that has been given to the CV Project. The Government has also assured that the number of trees on the Central Vista will increase once it has been renovated and any environmental damage is only temporary.</p>
