What is wrestling?

Wrestling is a sport that is played by two people. They have to pin down their opponents on their backs to win the match. It is a popular sport played in the Olympics and various other tournaments.

The World Wrestling Championship is one such competition. The latest edition of this competition was held from 10th September 2022 to 18th September 2022 in Belgrade, Serbia.

What is the World Wrestling Championship?

The United World Wrestling organises the World Wrestling Championships. Men's Greco-Roman Wrestling began in 1904. The first Men's Freestyle Wrestling competition was held in 1951, while the first Women's Freestyle Wrestling event was held in 1987. It is a wrestling competition in which wrestlers from various countries, including Indian wrestlers, take part.

Okay. What is the difference between Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling?

Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling are two different types of wrestling. In Greco-Roman, a wrestler is not allowed to hold an opponent below the waist. They cannot even use their legs to defend or attack. They must only use their body or torso to win the match.

Wrestlers in freestyle wrestling can hold their opponent below the waist and use their legs to defend or attack.

How did all of the competing teams perform in this competition?

All the wrestlers tried their best to win medals. But not everybody could win one. The United States of America (USA) won the most medals. They won 15 medals in total (7 gold, 6 silver, and 2 bronze). They were followed by Japan (7 gold, 1 silver, and 5 bronze) and Turkey (4 gold, 0 silver, and 3 bronze).

India only won two bronze medals. They were won by Bajrang Punia (Men’s Freestyle) and Vinesh Phogat (Women’s Freestyle). We hope that the Indian wrestlers learn from this experience and improve themselves for future tournaments. What are your thoughts on wrestling? Is it a sport worth watching?
