It's finally 2024! The new year allows us to be hopeful, learn from the good things, and fix past mistakes. To do this well, let's look back at the most important news from last year:
- India became the country with the most people in the world, even more than China. This is not a good thing.
- Turkey and Syria had big earthquakes that caused much damage to life and property.
- In the Indian state of Manipur, there were fights between different communities, such as Meiteis and Kukis. Even though the violence has gone down, the state is still struggling.
- The Indian Prime Minister inaugurated the new Parliament building. The peacock-themed Lok Sabha can hold 888 members, while the lotus-themed Rajya Sabha can seat 384 members.
- The tourist submersible called ‘Titan’ went missing soon after it went under the ocean. After 15 days of searching, it was found that it had imploded near the Titanic wreckage site.
- In the tech world, Mark Zuckerberg, who owns Meta, launched a new social media site called 'Threads' to compete with Twitter. Elon Musk, owner of Twitter, changed the site’s name to 'X.'
- India's space agency, ISRO, did something amazing. They successfully landed a spacecraft named Chandrayaan 3 on the Moon's south pole. It made India proud and showed that it's really good at space stuff.
- Leaders from around the world met in New Delhi for the G20 Summit. They talked about big problems globally with the theme 'One Earth, One Family, One Future.'
- Sadly, there was also a big problem. In the Middle East, a group called Hamas launched a bunch of rockets into Israel, starting a war. Many people have lost their lives due to it, but the war is still going on. Let us pray that the violence ends soon.
- In Uttarakhand, an under-construction tunnel collapsed, and 41 workers got stuck inside. They were saved after 17 days with the help of rat-hole miners.
- The year ended with a serious problem in the Indian Parliament. Some people opened gas canisters inside and protested about things like unemployment, issues for farmers, and the fighting in Manipur.
