<h5>What’s The News?</h5><p>Scientists have found something very interesting in the Amazon rainforest. Many trees, especially the tall ones, are growing thicker trunks than before. In the last 30 years, tree trunks have grown about 3% thicker every ten years. Scientists learned this by studying the trees in hundreds of places across the Amazon for many years.</p><h5>What Did The Scientists Find?</h5><p>The tallest trees at the top of the forest are growing the fastest. These trees are called canopy trees because they make a roof over the forest. Their trunks can grow 6–7% thicker every ten years. But the smaller trees that live under the shade are not growing as well, and some are even going down in number.</p><p>Scientists measure tree trunks using something called “basal area.” It means checking how wide a tree is at chest height. A bigger basal area means the tree has more wood and keeps more carbon inside it.</p><h5>Why Are The Trees Growing More?</h5><p>Trees make their own food using sunlight, water, and a gas called carbon dioxide (CO₂). This process is called photosynthesis. The green part of leaves, called chlorophyll, helps the tree catch sunlight to make food.</p><p>Because there is now more CO₂ in the air, trees can make food faster and grow bigger. Scientists call this the “CO₂ fertilisation effect.” It is like the trees are getting an extra meal! But trees still need enough water and good soil to keep growing well.</p><h5>Why Is This Important?</h5><p>When trees grow thicker, they store more carbon. This helps the Earth because too much carbon dioxide makes our planet hotter and causes climate change. The Amazon acts like a “carbon sink,” which means it takes in more carbon than it gives out. It also helps bring rain by adding moisture to the air.</p><p>But if the forest has too many fires, droughts, or too many trees are cut down, it will stop helping as much.</p><h5>What Can We Do?</h5><p>The fast growth of trees is good news, but it may not last forever. If the Earth keeps getting hotter, trees may stop growing fast. We can help by reducing pollution and protecting the Amazon forest.</p><p>The Amazon may not really be the “lungs of the Earth,” but it still helps our planet stay safe and cool.</p>
