Huh?! Butter chicken battle?

Imagine two chickens wrestling WWE-style! Haha, it's not actually a fight between chickens but a legal battle over who invented the dish ‘butter chicken’.

Two famous Delhi restaurants, Daryaganj and Moti Mahal, both claim to be the inventors of butter chicken and dal makhani. This has started a legal battle in the Delhi High Court (HC).

A short background.

Moti Mahal claims its founder, Kundan Lal Gujral, created butter chicken, while the Jaggi family (owners of Daryaganj) says it was created by the late Kundan Lal Jaggi.

Daryaganj's lawyer said both men started the first Moti Mahal in Pakistan. After Independence, it was opened in Delhi, where Gujral only handled marketing, while Jaggi ran the kitchen, inventing the dish.

The HC is checking new evidence, such as an old photo of Kundan Lal Gujral and Kundan Lal Jaggi in Pakistan, a 1949 partnership agreement, etc.

Daryaganj says the agreement signifies that both restaurants can claim their ancestors created the dishes.

The court will hear the case again on 29th May 2024. The court has to decide if any one or both restaurants can take the credit for the creation of butter chicken.

So, have you tried butter chicken from these restaurants? Tell us in the comments.
