Bengaluru Gets Flooded by Heavy Rain
What is the News?

On May 18, 2025, Bengaluru, also known as India's "Silicon Valley", had very heavy rain during the night. The rain fell from 1:30 to 5:30 in the morning. Some places got up to 13.2 cm of rain!

The rain was so strong that many parts of the city got flooded, causing an 'Urban Flood'. Roads looked like rivers, and houses were filled with water. Some homes were even under five feet of water! Vehicles stopped moving, and people got stuck. Many important places were affected. Sadly, at least three people lost their lives.

What is an Urban Flood?

An urban flood happens when it rains a lot and the water cannot drain away. Cities have many roads and buildings made of concrete. Water cannot go into the ground through concrete, and starts collecting in one place.

If the drains are blocked or too small, water gets stuck. As a result, it floods roads, homes, and other places very quickly.

Different Types of Floods

There are different kinds of floods too!.

A river flood happens when rivers become too full and overflow, flooding nearby areas.

A flash flood happens suddenly after heavy rain or when a dam breaks.

An urban flood happens in cities because of too many buildings and bad drainage, just like Bengaluru.

A coastal flood happens near the sea or ocean, mostly during storms or cyclones.

Why Did Bengaluru Get Flooded?

Bengaluru was flooded because it could not handle so much rain. Many lakes that collected rainwater were filled to build houses and buildings.

Also, the drains were blocked, so the water had nowhere to go. There was also a lot of construction work going on, which made it hard for water to flow properly.

How Can We Stop Urban Floods?

To stop Urban Floods, we must take care of our cities. We should not throw garbage in the drains and must protect lakes and open spaces. Builders should leave space for water to flow.

We can also collect rainwater and use it later, this process is called 'Rainwater Harvesting'. These small steps can help keep our cities safe and prevent situations like this.
