<h5>What is BTS?</h5>  <p>BTS, or Bangtan Sonyeondan, is a popular Korean-pop (K-pop) band from South Korea. It comprises seven members: RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook. BTS fans refer to themselves as ARMYs, which is short for Adorable Representative MC for Youth.</p>

They have had a glorious nine-year run in the music industry, which has brought a lot of accolades and wealth their way. However, the members have recently decided to put their careers on hold to fulfil their military commitments.
</p> <h5>What is conscription?</h5>  <p>Recruitment methods of the armed forces vary across nations. While some depend solely on voluntary entrants, some also demand the compulsory participation of their citizens. </p>
<p>The type of recruitment undertaken by a nation depends on the severity of its military threats and the number of personnel it requires to tackle said threats. You must have heard of Russia asking its male citizens to join the military in the wake of the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war.</p>
<p>Conscription refers to the compulsory enlistment of citizens into military service. The practice dates back to the ancient period. In modern times, around 49 countries have laws for mandatory military service, such as Russia, Ukraine, Switzerland, South Korea, etc.
</p> <h5>Why does South Korea demand compulsory military service from its citizens?</h5>  <p>Despite reaching an armistice agreement in 1953, North and South Korea are still technically at war. That is why conscription is indispensable for the South Korean government.</p>
<p>All South Korean males between the age of 18-35 are supposed to serve either in the army (21 months), navy (23 months), or air force (24 months). Those unfit for active military duty can choose alternatives, such as the police force, coast guards, fire services, etc.</p>
<p>Famous athletes, artists who have won international contests, and people suffering from severe health conditions can be exempted from military service altogether. However, those who oppose conscription end up working in the prison system for 36 months.</p> <h5>What was the controversy around BTS and conscription?</h5>  <p>In the past, there were a lot of speculations concerning BTS’s possible exemption from mandatory military service. Politicians and fans claim that the band's efforts to elevate South Korea's image on the global stage make them eligible for exemption. However, South Korean law can only exempt traditional artists such as violinists, pianists, ballet dancers, etc.</p>

Kim Seokjin (Jin), who turns 30 this year, will be the first to enlist in the military. The other six members will eventually do the same. But ARMYs should not lose any hope because the band is all set to reunite in 2025 after the completion of their services.</p> <h5>What did we learn from this article?</h5>  <p>From this article, we learned that even famous celebrities like the BTS have to step up and serve their country when the time comes.
