<h5>Who was Mulayam Singh Yadav?</h5>  <p>Mulayam Singh Yadav was born on 22nd November 1939, in Saifai, a small village in Uttar Pradesh’s (UP) Etawah district. He was an Indian politician and recently passed away at the age of 82. Yadav was a skilled wrestler and entered politics in his early twenties. Yadav was the founder of the Samajwadi Party (SP).</p>
<p>He had also been elected as the chief minister of UP thrice. He was seen as a prominent figure in politics. However, in the last few years, he kept away from the public spotlight due to ill health. Yadav was affectionately called "Netaji" by the supporters of the Samajwadi Party. He also served as the country’s defence minister from 1996 to 1998.</p>
<p>Yadav completed his education with a Master of Arts (MA) in political science. He was mentored by veteran politicians like Ram Manohar Lohia and Raj Narain.

      </figure> <p>Mulayam Singh Yadav took the post of UP’s chief minister three times during his career. He served as the chief minister from 1989-1991, from 1993-1995, and from 2003-2007. He was elected a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) ten times and a Member of Parliament (MP) seven times, usually from Mainpuri and Azamgarh.</p>
<p>For many years, he held the status of a national leader, but UP was his primary playground for politics. He rose through the ranks of UP politics during the politically turbulent 1970s, followed by the late 1980s, and early 1990s. He made a name for himself as a leader who supported caste-based reservations, started various welfare schemes, etc.</p>
<p>After SP won the 2012 elections, Yadav handed over the mantle to his son, Akhilesh Yadav, who became UP’s chief minister. </p> <h5>When did Mulayam Singh Yadav form the Samajwadi Party?</h5> <figure>

      </figure> <p>The SP was founded in 1992 in Lucknow, UP. Mulayam Singh Yadav founded the party and served as its president for many years. This party believes in equality for all. The party aimed to turn the state's lower caste members and the minority Muslim community into a political force.
The SP aims to work for and uplift the weaker sections of society. Since 2017, Akhilesh Yadav has served as the party's president, succeeding his father.
</p> <h5>How were his last few years in politics?</h5>  <p>The Yadav family became divided into two factions since Akhilesh Yadav became chief minister of UP in 2012. Mulayam Singh Yadav found himself in the middle of a family feud in the months running up to the 2017 elections. His son Akhilesh and brother Shivpal Yadav fought to gain control over the party.</p>
<p>As Akhilesh showed his capability of leading the party after succeeding his father as the national president, Yadav withdrew from the spotlight. He made only occasional public appearances. In the 2017 elections, SP was defeated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).</p>
<p>Yadav was not well for some time and breathed his last on 10th October 2022. Several other prominent politicians from across the country have offered condolences on his death.
