<h5>What is the Global Hunger Index?</h5>  <p>The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is jointly published by two non-governmental organisations (NGOs) named Welthungerhilfe and Concern Worldwide. The GHI has been published since 2006. This year’s report is the 17th edition of the GHI. This report is published to thoroughly track and measure hunger at global, regional, and country levels.</p>
<p>The report is scored out of 100. A low score increases a country's ranking and shows greater performance. In this year's report, the top 5 countries are Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Chile, China, and Croatia. The top 17 countries in this list have not been given individual ranks but have collectively ranked 1-17. Yemen (121) is at the bottom of the list.
The score is given after measuring four indicators: undernourishment, child stunting, child wasting, and child mortality.</p> <h5>Why are these four indicators used to make this report?</h5>  <p>Before understanding why the four indicators are used, we need to understand what the indicators are.
Undernourishment - the percentage of the population whose food requirements are not met.
Child stunting - the percentage of children under five years of age having a low height for their age.</p>
<p>Child wasting - the percentage of children under five years of age having a low weight for their age.</p>
<p>Child mortality - the percentage of children who die before age five.</p>
<p>Undernourishment measures inadequate food access. Child wasting shows severe malnutrition, while child stunting and mortality show a child's access to food, susceptibility to nutritional deficiencies, and the nutritional quality that they receive. All these measurements are necessary to compile the GHI.
</p> <h5>What is the importance of the GHI?</h5>  <p>The goal of mapping hunger is to ensure that “zero hunger by 2030” is achieved across the world. It is one of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. The report also aims to raise awareness and highlight the struggle against hunger.</p>

It also aims to draw attention to areas of the globe with the highest levels of hunger and the greatest need for extra help to eliminate hunger. Doing so can help those countries fight hunger.
</p> <h5>How did India perform in this report and what was the reaction to it?</h5> <figure>

      </figure> <p>India has been ranked 107th in this report with a score of 29.1 (oh no!). The country was ranked behind Sri Lanka (rank 64), Myanmar (rank 71), Nepal (rank 81), Bangladesh (rank 84), and Pakistan (rank 99).</p>
<p>The central government rejected the GHI 2022 ranking, stating that the report was erroneous. A statement was issued that the report tarnished the country's image and showed it as a nation that does not provide its people with food security and nutritional needs.
The government further stated that the report does not show the ground reality, but also chooses to dismiss government efforts to provide food security for the public, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
So many children in our country go to bed hungry, so we should do our part and try to not waste food.
