<h5>How is sound recorded in videos?</h5>  <p>Have you ever recorded a video of yourself singing? When you play the recorded video to see how you performed, you may notice how noisy the video is! You can hear random noises like birds chirping or traffic from outside. You can hardly hear your own voice.</p>
<p>This is because mobile phones can record audio with their built-in microphone. This microphone records all kinds of noises, even unwanted ones. This is why pop stars and bands record their songs in special studios with advanced microphones.
This ensures no other noise interferes with the music being recorded. These high-tech microphones are also used in movies. That’s why we can hear actors speak so clearly as if they were right in front of us. </p> <h5>What’s wrong with how microphones record sounds?</h5>  <p>The purpose of a microphone is to record sounds. But it picks up many noise disturbances. It’s such a task to separate these disturbances from what is supposed to be recorded. Sound editors and engineers have to find and remove them from the recording one at a time. 
If only there was a way for a camera to hear as clearly as it could see, then this problem could be eliminated. But how does a machine meant to capture videos, capture sound?
</p> <h5>A camera that can record sounds without a microphone, what!?</h5>  <p>We know that all video cameras don’t record sound. For example, security cameras at school and in grocery stores only capture video footage without sound. Some cameras have a built-in microphone that captures sound, but not very well.</p>
<p>A few creative researchers from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in the USA have invented something cool. They have developed a camera system that can see sound (yes, see, not hear!).</p>
<p>Not only can this camera capture sound, but the sound is crystal-clear! In an entire orchestra, it can hear every single instrument. That means that using such a camera, we can hear each instrument (of the forty-four instruments playing) separately! Isn’t that incredible!?
</p> <h5>How does this camera “see” sound?</h5>  <p>Did you know that each sound creates a vibration unique to it? Each sound sends vibrations into the air around it. Be it as quiet as your heartbeat or as loud as a car’s engine. These vibrations in the air can’t be seen by us.</p>
<p>The CMU researchers have figured out a way to capture these vibrations by using a camera with two lenses . When someone strums a guitar, the cameras can capture the specific vibration that the sound produces. These vibrations can be reconstructed back into sound in the video that is captured by the camera.</p>
<p>These cool cameras can be used in factories and offices. The camera could be placed somewhere it can see every single machine. The camera would then be able to identify which machine needs maintenance, just through the sound that it’s making. 
</p> <h5>Uh-oh. Can this camera hear humans too?</h5>  <p>Yes! This camera sees the vibrations made by anything that makes sounds. That includes us, humans. When we speak, our sound releases vibrations into the air. This camera can capture these vibrations and replay what we just said.
