<h5>What is deepfake technology?
</h5>  <p>The simulation of reality by computers has improved over time. For example, in movie-making, real locations were once common. But modern cinema relies on computer-generated scenery, characters, etc. Most of the time, these scenes are almost indistinguishable from reality.</p>
<p>Similarly, deepfakes are a collection of fake images and audio that have been put together using a computer to spread misinformation and mimic the voice or appearance of a person (scary, isn’t it?). Deepfakes can be used to create people who do not exist. It can also create fakes which will look as if a real person is saying and doing things they did not say or do.</p>
<p>According to a post by cybersecurity company Norton, deepfake technology is now being used for illegal purposes like scams, identity theft, etc. Former American president Barack Obama, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Facebook’s chief executive officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg, etc, have all been impersonated using deepfake technology.</p>
<p>Recently, China has created a new policy that will limit the use of deep synthesis technology. This policy will come into effect from 10th January 2023. Deep synthesis is the process of creating fake text, images, audio, and video. Deepfakes are among the most infamous uses of this technology.
</p> <h5>What is this new policy of China?
</h5>  <p>According to the policy, deep synthesis service providers and users must make sure that any content that has been faked using the technology is clearly identified and can be traced back to its original source. Through this, the creator of the video can be traced if any such videos are used for any illegal activities.</p>
<p>The law also requires those who use technology to change someone's voice or picture to tell them and get their permission before doing so. Also, only those sources that are on the government-approved list of news organisations can be used for sharing news made using this technology.
</p> <h5>Why has this policy been implemented?
</h5>  <p>China's internet authority expressed concern that the unchecked development and usage of deep synthesis could result in its application in illegal activities including online scams and defamation. The policy was created in an effort to reduce such illegal activities.</p>
<p>If implemented effectively, this new policy of China can set an example and establish a set of rules that other nations could follow.
</p> <h5>What steps are other nations taking to fight deepfakes?
</h5>  <p>To prevent the spread of false information through deepfakes, the European Union (EU) has certain laws. The laws require that social media platforms like Twitter, Google, and Meta take action against deepfakes and fake accounts. These businesses could be fined up to 6% of their annual income if the laws are violated.</p>
<p>The United States of America (USA) also introduced a law to combat deepfake technology. Under this law, deepfakes and the technology involved can be investigated to develop potential defences against them. Some American states have passed laws making it illegal to distribute deepfake videos.</p>
<p>However, there are no laws prohibiting the use of deepfake technology in India.

</h5>  <p>We learned how technology can be used to harm people. Although technology has greatly improved and eased our lives, it may also be harmful. You should keep in mind that not everything you see on the internet is “real news”. Some images or audio or videos could be fake too!</p>
