What was the high court judge’s complaint?

Recently, an Allahabad High Court judge travelling by train from New Delhi to Prayagraj faced some discomfort. The train was around three hours late. The judge had informed the T.T.E (Travelling Ticket Examiner) about his travel and expected government railway police (GRP) employees to be in the coach to receive him, but that was not the case.

He also complained that no pantry car workers came to provide refreshments. His calls to the pantry car also went unanswered. This caused inconvenience to the judge while he was travelling. He made a protocol officer write a complaint letter to railway authorities, demanding an explanation from the concerned officers.

The Chief Justice of India (CJI), DY Chandrachud, criticised the judge's complaint.

What did the Chief Justice of India say?

CJI DY Chandrachud said to all High Court Chief Justices in India that they should not misuse protocol facilities to display power. He also said that protocol facilities should not be used in any way that causes difficulty to others or shows the judiciary in a bad light.

The CJI also pointed out that High Court judges do not have disciplinary authority over railway employees. Therefore, making a complaint and demanding an explanation was not the right thing to do. Instead, a judge should set a positive example for others to follow.

What did we learn from this article?

We learned that someone in charge should not use their power to make things hard for others. Doing that can make people lose trust and respect for them. Misusing one’s power and rank to demand special treatment is not right.
