People in India are shocked by the passing away of Mukesh Chandrakar, a brave journalist who told the truth about corruption. Mukesh's body was recently found in a septic tank in Bijapur, Chhattisgarh, two days after he went missing.
Mukesh disappeared on New Year’s Day. His family was worried and told the police. The police tracked his phone and searched a place owned by a contractor named Suresh Chandrakar.
First, they found nothing. But later, they found Mukesh’s body. It showed that he had been hurt badly.
Mukesh was a well-known journalist. He was not afraid to speak the truth. He even helped rescue a commando who had been kidnapped by Maoists.
Recently, Mukesh was reporting on a road scam in Bijapur. Contractor Suresh (also a distant relative of Mukesh) was linked to this road scam. This could be why Mukesh was killed.
Many people are asking the police to find out what happened. The police have arrested Suresh Chandrakar and his wife, along with his siblings and another man named Mahendra. People want the police to find out the truth so that the wrong-doers can be punished.
Attacks against journalists.
Sadly, this is not the first time a journalist has been attacked in India. In 2022, a reporter was shot because he told people about illegal sand mining.
According to a group called Reporters Without Borders, 3-4 journalists are killed in India each year. Even though being a journalist can be very dangerous, many people still do it because they believe it is important. But many are asking: who will protect them?
