EU Passes Law Requiring iPhones to Use USB-C by the End of 2024

Chargers for Apple and Android phones are not the same. This generates a lot of e-waste. To tackle this, the EU has passed a new law requiring the use of USB-C ports on all devices.

How do chargers and charging cables harm the environment?

We all use cables to charge our phones. But have we ever considered the environmental impact of these chargers and cables? Probably not.

When we throw away our old charging cables and chargers, we are creating electronic waste (e-waste). E-waste is toxic and non-biodegradable and harms the environment. So, many phone companies have stopped selling chargers with their cell phones. However, people are still buying chargers since they are different for Android and Apple phones. This increases e-waste generation and leads to people spending more money unnecessarily. Keeping this in mind, the European Union (EU) has passed a new law.

The European Parliament has voted to make USB-C the standard charging connector for a wide range of electronic items by the end of 2024. This law requires all electronic goods manufacturers to include a USB-C connector in their products.

This law will affect Apple products because many of them use the Lightning connector rather than USB-C. All mobile phones, tablets, and cameras sold in the EU must include a USB-C port by the end of 2024. The rule will apply to laptops starting in the spring of 2026.

Exemptions will be made for devices like smartwatches, health trackers, etc., that are too small to have a USB-C port.

Why was this law passed?

This law was passed to reduce e-waste, increase product sustainability, and make the use of various gadgets more convenient. If the charging ports on all devices are similar, a person can charge several devices using the same charger. This will allow them to save money while also reducing e-waste.

Is there any such law in India?

No, there is currently no such law in India. However, the Indian government is considering passing a similar law. The government will meet with smartphone manufacturers to discuss the possibility of eliminating the use of multiple chargers in India. This will be done to reduce e-waste and avoid requiring users to purchase many types of chargers. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think such a law would be good for the nation?
