Okay! What is in the news?

Captain Shiva Chouhan is the first female soldier to serve on the Siachen Glacier. After training, she was posted to the Kumar station in Siachen, which is 15,600 feet high (very high up in the Himalayas!).

Captain Chouhan will lead a team of Sappers, who will have various tasks to complete. She was trained alongside other army officers and soldiers in the Siachen Battle School. Earlier, women officers were posted at the Siachen base camp as part of their army duties.

Captain Shiva Chouhan is from Rajasthan and is an officer in the Bengal Sappers. She attended school in Udaipur and later studied engineering. She always wanted to join the Indian Armed Forces.

She passed the army recruitment exam and finished her training at the Officers Training Academy in Chennai. In May 2021, she got selected for the Engineer Regiment.

She became the leader of the Sura Soi Engineer Regiment at Siachen. Later, based on her performance, she was chosen to attend the Siachen Battle School. After completing her training there, she was posted to the Siachen Glacier as the first female officer.

What do we know about women in the Indian armed forces?

More women have joined the Indian armed forces in recent years. They are no longer just working in the medical field, but also as soldiers, fighter pilots, and army officers.

The Indian Military Nursing Service was formed in 1888, which was the first time women served in the Indian Armed Forces. Since then, more women have joined the armed forces.

The Supreme Court of India has also ordered that women officers be given permanent appointments in all three branches of the armed forces (the Army, Navy, and Air Force).
