<h5>Okay! What has happened?
</h5>  <p>Recently, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine met with President Joe Biden of the United States of America (USA) at the White House. This was Zelenskyy's first known wartime journey outside Ukraine since Russia's invasion began in February 2022.</p>
<p>Zelenskyy arrived at the White House for a bilateral meeting with Biden, who was accompanied by Vice President Kamala Harris, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Attorney General Merrick Garland. The USA has been helping out Ukraine since the war began.</p>
<p>Zelenskyy's visit occurred as the US government prepared to vote for a spending plan that provides $45 billion as military and economic aid to Ukraine in the coming year. The Biden government also unveiled a package of over $2 billion in security assistance in addition to military and economic aid.</p>
<p>The USA has plans to help strengthen Ukraine’s defences and provide them with all sorts of help in the war against Russia.
</p> <h5>Why is there a war between Russia and Ukraine?

      </figure> <p>Since 1922, Russia and Ukraine have been part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) or the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union split into many countries in 1991 for a variety of social, economic, and military reasons. At the time, Ukraine was one of the countries that earned independence from the USSR.</p>
<p>The Ukrainian parliament decided to get rid of President Viktor Yanukovych in 2014 after he rejected an agreement with the European Union in favour of deeper ties with Russia. Soon after, masked Russian troops took control of the Crimean parliament, a peninsula in southern Ukraine.</p>
<p>The recent conflict is due to Russia's opposition to Ukraine's close connections with and ambition to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Russia has demanded that Ukraine and other former Soviet countries must not be given NATO memberships.</p>
<p>Russia declared war on Ukraine on 24th February 2022. Ukrainian forces are now in a battle with the Russian military.
</p> <h5>What’s the current situation there?
</h5>  <p>Russian missiles and drones are almost constantly bombarding Ukrainian cities, destroying large parts of the country's electrical and water infrastructure. The Ukrainian government has said that more than 700 important infrastructures such as gas pipelines, bridges, etc., have been damaged in Ukraine since the war began.</p>
<p>The Russian military has been targeting Ukraine's electricity supply facilities since October. The constant bombing has seriously harmed Ukraine's electricity supply. As a result, emergency shutdowns have occurred, leaving people without electricity in freezing temperatures.</p>
<p>Volodymyr Zelenskyy was recently chosen as Time's Person of the Year for 2022. He received the title for his bravery in the face of Russia's invasion, as well as for inspiring Ukrainians to stand up and oppose Russia's invasion.
