On 7 November 2023, Australia faced Afghanistan in the tournament’s league table match. Afghanistan scored 291 runs and set a target of 292 for Australia. When it was Australia’s chance to bat, their batters struggled and quickly got out.</p><p>Glenn Maxwell arrived to bat when Australia was at 49/4 in the ninth over. Australia lost seven wickets by 91 runs. Many thought Afghanistan would win the match easily. However, Maxwell had other plans. He played a blistering knock and helped Australia win the match. The right-hander scored 201 runs off 128 balls, which included ten sixes and 21 fours.</p><p>Maxwell didn’t give up and helped Australia win despite suffering from terrible cramps well before reaching the target. His 201 runs are the highest by a batter in an ODI run chase. He is also the first batter to score a double-hundred while chasing a target. He also set the record for the highest ODI score by a male Australian batter.</p><p>Maxwell also became the first non-opener in men's ODI history to score a double century. His knock is also the third double-century scored in men's Cricket World Cup history. Martin Guptill and Chris Gayle scored the previous two in the 2015 World Cup.</p><p>Maxwell's double-hundred was the fastest in a men's Cricket World Cup match. It is also the second-fastest in all ODIs. The partnership between Maxwell and Pat Cummins became the highest partnership for the seventh wicket or lower in men’s ODI. Maxwell has now scored three centuries in World Cups while batting at No. 5 or lower.</p><p>No other batter scored more than one century when batting fifth or lower.
