<h5>Dogfight?! Why would dogs fight?</h5><p>What image does the word ’dogfight’ paint in your mind? Maybe two dogs fighting each other. Right? In this context, it’s about planes fighting it out in the sky.</p><p>The term’ dogfight’ means an aerial battle between fighter aircraft that takes place at close range. The term ‘dogfight’ likely originated during World War I, and this fighting method was also seen extensively in World War II.</p><p>In a dogfight, planes engage in aerial combat. Pilots attempt to shoot down their opponents while avoiding getting shot themselves.</p><h5>How is AI involved in this?</h5><figure class="image"><img src="https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/newsahoot.appspot.com/o/human-v-ai-dogfight%2FX62A%20Vista.jpg?alt=media&amp;token=03c0c195-8f64-4570-b605-78dbcb31fa0d"><figcaption>The AI-piloted aircraft. But what if I tell you that a dogfight was held between <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.newsahoot.com/articles/how-does-artificial-intelligence-work">artificial intelligence</a> (AI) and humans? Sounds like a sci-fi movie!</p><p>The United States Air Force (USAF) has recently confirmed the first successful dogfight between an AI-piloted fighter jet and a human-piloted aircraft.</p><p>The test was conducted last year and was part of a USAF and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) programme.</p><h5>Who won the dogfight?</h5><div class="raw-html-embed"><figure> <iframe width="100%" height="350" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NaY5rF7n6VE" title="US completes first dogfight between AI-controlled F-16 and human pilot" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen=""></iframe><figcaption>Watch the WasteShark in action!</figcaption></figure></div><p>The USAF and DARPA didn’t disclose who won the fight. The dogfight matched a person flying an F-16 aircraft against the experimental X-62A VISTA, a modified F-16. It was also a test fight, and no live weapons were used.</p><p>There were also pilots onboard the X-62A VISTA to switch off the AI and take control if anything went wrong. But that opportunity did not arise.</p><h5>Innovation in warfare!</h5><p>AI is being used everywhere these days. Why not warfare? The successful dogfight highlights how AI can now be used in warfare.</p><p>Maybe we will have robots fighting it out in the future, which will minimise human death and injury. But, using AI in warfare raises various questions. What if the AIs turn against humans?</p><p>Maybe we should focus on using AI to solve issues related to healthcare, environmental challenges, etc., that benefit humans.</p>
