India Will Count Everyone Again!
India has announced its next census. Census is the process of counting all the people in the country. It will begin in April 2026 in cold places like Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. In the rest of India, it will start in March 2027.
For the first time since 1931, the census will also collect caste information. And for the first time ever, it will be done using phones and tablets instead of paper and pen!
What Is a Census?
A census is when the government counts how many people live in India. It happens every 10 years. Trained workers go to every house and ask questions about the people who live there. They ask about things like age, gender, school, and job.
There are two parts to the census. First is 'House Listing'. This means checking what the house is made of and if it has water, lights, and a toilet.
The second part is called 'Population Enumeration'. In this, the workers ask about the people living in the house.
In 2026–27, the census will be done using digital tools like tablets and phones.
When Was the Last Census?
The last census was done in 2011. The next one was supposed to happen in 2021, but it got delayed because of COVID-19. Since 2011, many things have changed, like how many people live in India, and how they are living. So, it is important to survey again.
Why Is the Census Important?
The government uses the census to plan important things like schools, hospitals, roads, and trains. It also helps decide how many MPs (Members of Parliament) each state gets. States with more people get more MPs
This time, the census will also collect caste information. This will help the government make better plans for jobs and education.
What Will We Learn?
The census is a huge task! It helps us understand how people live in India and what people need.
Many workers will help to do this big job. The results will help build a better future for everyone!
