<h5>What are hurricanes?</h5>  <p>Hurricanes are also known as tropical cyclones. They are storms that originate over oceans and also have thunderstorm activity. Hurricanes gain their energy from warm ocean waters. Hurricanes are among the most violent storms in nature. They create storm surge floods, strong winds, and heavy rainfall which cause tornadoes, inland flooding, and rip currents.
Hurricanes form due to atmospheric disturbances, such as a cluster of thunderstorms. Certain climatic factors must occur for the disturbances to turn into hurricanes. They are warm ocean waters, an unstable atmosphere caused by temperature differences, etc.</p>
<p>The maximum wind speed is used to classify tropical cyclones.</p>
<p>1. Winds less than 39 miles per hour (mph) or 62.76 kilometres per hour (kph):  Tropical depressions.</p>
<p>2. Wind speed between 39 mph-73 mph (62.76 kph-117.48 kph): Tropical storms</p>
<p>3. Wind speed greater than 74 mph (119.09 kph): Hurricanes</p>
<p>Major hurricanes have a minimum wind speed of 111 mph (178.63 kph), which can reach 180 mph (289.68 kph).</p> <h5>Which hurricane has hit Florida?</h5> <figure>

      </figure> <p>Florida, United States of America (USA), was struck by a hurricane named “Ian” on 28th September 2022. The hurricane unleashed wind, storm surges, and floods on much of coastal southwest Florida. Government officials have provided emergency services to help the people affected by the hurricane.</p>
<p>Electricity has also been cut off due to the hurricane. Millions of people in Florida and the states of Georgia and South Carolina have been affected. The hurricane has also caused a lot of property damage.
As Hurricane Ian approached Florida's Gulf Coast, water was drained out from Tampa Bay. But don’t worry! It was later refilled. Tampa Bay is a vast natural harbour and shallow estuary located on Florida's west-central coast and connects to the Gulf of Mexico. The winds of Hurricane Ian were so strong that all the water from Tampa Bay was pushed out.</p> <h5>Is India affected by hurricanes?</h5>  <p>Tropical cyclones or hurricanes do hit India. The Indian subcontinent is one of the world’s worst-affected regions. This region faces around 10% of the world’s tropical cyclones. Most of them originate over the Bay of Bengal and strike the eastern part of the country. Every year, five to six tropical cyclones form, with two or three of them being severe.</p>

Tropical cyclones hit India in May-June and October-November. Cyclones do cause a lot of damage. You must remember the cyclone “Amphan” that hit the country in 2020, causing a lot of damage.
</p> <h5>How can one stay safe during a hurricane?</h5>  <p>If a severe hurricane is about to hit one’s area, the best thing to do would be to evacuate. One should keep emergency contact numbers handy. An emergency kit must also be prepared in advance. The government generally sets up shelters. The route to reach those shelters must be memorised.</p>
<p>If evacuation is not possible, emergency supplies such as food, water, medicine, etc., must be stored well in advance. One should also follow government instructions to stay safe. </p>
