Jupiter will be visible to stargazers on September 26th, 2022, as it reaches opposition. Opposition happens when an astronomical object (such as other planets) rises in the east while the Sun sets in the west. As a result, the Sun and the astronomical objects are on opposite sides of the earth.

Jupiter looks larger and brighter during the opposition. Also, this time, Jupiter will be making its closest approach to Earth seen in the last 59 years.

What makes this event fascinating?

This event is fascinating as, according to NASA, Jupiter has not been this close to Earth since October 1963.

Jupiter is around 600 million miles (96,56,06,400 kilometres) from Earth at its furthest point. On 26th September 2022, it will be about 367 million miles (59,06,29,248 kilometres) away from Earth.

How can someone observe Jupiter during the event?

Anyone with a small telescope or a pair of binoculars can view Jupiter. Three of Jupiter's four largest moons (Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, and Io) can also be observed.

People not using binoculars or telescopes will see Jupiter as a bright spot of light that, unlike stars, will not twinkle.

Jupiter is one of the brightest objects in the night sky, making it easy to spot. If someone is having trouble finding the planet, they can use an astronomy app to locate it.

How important is this event?

This event is significant for researchers. They will be able to study the planet better. Many clear images of the planet can be taken, which will help scientists in their research. Space enthusiasts will also be eagerly waiting to see Jupiter.

Are you guys excited about this event? I know that we are! Will you be looking up towards the sky to observe our solar system's largest planet?
