What is the MBE honour?
In the United Kingdom (UK), special awards like the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), and Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) are given to people for doing great things and helping the country.
An MBE is the third-highest award in the Order of the British Empire, after the CBE and OBE. It is given to someone for exceptional achievements or community service.
The achievement or community service should have a long-term, significant impact and serve as an example for others. Recently, Blackpink has been awarded honorary MBE medals.
Why did Blackpink receive the MBE honour?
The famous K-pop group Blackpink received the MBE medals from King Charles at Buckingham Palace for supporting campaigns about climate change. South Korea’s president, Yoon Suk Yeol, and First Lady Kim Keon Hee were also there.
Blackpink members Roseanne Park (Rosé), Jennie Kim, Jisoo Kim, and Lalisa Manoban (Lisa) got the medals for being advocates for COP26 at the Summit in Glasgow in 2021.
What was Blackpink’s role as COP26 advocates?
As COP26 advocates, Blackpink made videos to help young people understand more about climate change. This got more young people interested in the summit in Glasgow.
The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has also appointed the group as global ambassador for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG). The group also encouraged many youngsters to discuss the topic of climate action.
Blackpink fans, called Blink, are really happy that the group got this award.
