<h5>What is a GI Tag?</h5><p>Imagine you have a special toy that is created in a specific city or town. This toy is notable for being unique and having special qualities due to where it is made. So, a particular label called a "Geographical Indication" (GI) Tag is given to this toy.</p><p>A GI Tag is a label placed on items with a specific geographical origin and a reputation due to that origin. GI Tags are intellectual property rights protected by the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property.</p><p>GI Tag is generally given to agricultural items, foodstuffs, wine and spirit drinks, handicrafts, and industrial products. In India, the GI Tag is granted by the Geographical Indication Registry in Chennai. This is overseen by the Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trade Marks under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.</p><p>The first Indian product to receive the GI Tag was Darjeeling tea. The Lakadong turmeric is found in Meghalaya’s Lakadong district of Jaintia Hills.</p><p>The minister said that the Lakadong turmeric has a high curcumin content, and the GI Tag will help farmers properly market the product and earn more from its sale. Customers will also be able to access the original product. Lakadong turmeric is regarded as one of the best kinds of turmeric in the world.</p><p>It is darker in colour and is grown naturally with no fertiliser. Along with the turmeric, Larnai pottery, Garo Dakmanda (traditional dress), and Garo Chubitchi (a beverage) were also given the tag.</p><p>Dakmanda is a handwoven ankle-length garment worn by Garo women in Meghalaya. Chubitchi is a drink made from rice and is drunk during feasts and festivities. The GI Tag ensures that only those registered as authorised users are permitted to use the popular product name. These are some advantages of a GI Tag.</p>
