Where has the lithium reserve been found?

Huge lithium reserves have been discovered in India for the first time, with a total of 5.9 million tonnes found in Jammu and Kashmir.

Before this discovery, India only had a small lithium reserve in Karnataka. Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile control half of the world's lithium reserves.

The Indian mining ministry said that the government is going to get minerals such as lithium from Australia and Argentina. India currently imports minerals such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt.

What is lithium used for?

Lithium is a scarce and valuable metal used in rechargeable batteries for electronics such as mobile phones, laptops, cameras, and electric vehicles. It is a silvery, soft, non-ferrous metal that can store large amounts of energy.

It is also used in a variety of things, including alloys with aluminium for planes, bicycle frames, and high-speed trains. It is also used in certain medications to treat depression.

Why is this discovery important for India?

The finding of lithium reserves in Jammu and Kashmir could result in new job opportunities, more money from lithium sales, etc. This discovery will also reduce India's dependence on imported lithium as global demand for lithium is likely to rise in the coming years.

As lithium-ion batteries are being used in electric vehicles, India's manufacturing ability may improve. This has the chance to cut pollution and improve air quality.

What did we learn from this article?

We learned about the value of natural resources and how they are used in a variety of products and industries. Some natural resources must be imported because they are not all available in India. However, the recent finding of lithium reserves has the opportunity to change the country's lithium industry.
