What did President Joe Biden sign?

President Joe Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act on 13th December 2022. This act offers protection under the law for same-sex and interracial couples. Many politicians also attended the signing. This shows the rising acceptance of same-sex marriages throughout the nation.

Biden previously opposed same-sex marriages. But his opinion changed over time. Now, after becoming the president of the country, Biden has signed the Respect for Marriage Act for the good of the country’s LGBTQ community.

How will this act affect same-sex and interracial couples?

In 2015, the US Supreme Court approved a law that permits same-sex marriages anywhere. Same-sex couples will be protected under the Respect for Marriage Act if the 2015 decision is ever cancelled. The new act will grant same-sex and interracial marriages the same federal rights as any other married couple.

The law also requires that the states of the United States of America (USA) recognise same-sex couples as married. Churches and other religious institutions can still refuse to conduct same-sex marriages.

Is same-sex marriage legal in India?

Discrimination against LGBTQ people is a crime in India. Same-sex relationships were not allowed in India for a very long time. This is no longer the case because such relationships have been recognised by the law. However, neither same-sex marriages nor adoptions by same-sex couples are recognised by the government.

Same-sex partnerships are not welcomed in many Indian societies. However, courts appear to be more progressive than the rest of society when it comes to same-sex couples. The Kerala High Court recently decided that despite opposition from their families, a same-sex couple could live together. This shows how views and times are improving.

We learned that people should not be discriminated against based on who they love. Everyone should be able to marry the person they love. And even if we personally do not agree with someone else’s way of life, we must still treat them with respect.
