A Very Big Win!
On June 14, 2025, the South African cricket team made history! They beat Australia by 5 wickets in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC). The match was played at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
This was the first time South Africa won the WTC. It was also their first ICC trophy in 27 years!
What Is the WTC?
The WTC is like the World Cup, but for Test cricket.
Test cricket is the longest form of cricket. It can be played for up to five days! It checks how well teams can bat, bowl, and work together.
The WTC is played between nine teams, all from different countries.
It was started in 2019 by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to make Test matches more fun and exciting.
New Zealand won the first WTC in 2021. Australia won the second in 2023. Now, South Africa has won the tournament in 2025.
How Does It Work?
Each team plays six test series in two years, with each series having from 2 to 5 matches. Three series are played in their own country, and three are played in the country of the opposite team.
Each team gets 12 points for winning a match, 6 for a tie, and 4 for a draw.
Since not all teams play the same number of matches, the ICC uses points percentage to decide the rankings.
The top two teams in the points table go to the final.
South Africa’s Big Win
South Africa reached the final by winning 8 out of 12 matches. Their points percentage was 69.44%.
In the final, they had to score 282 runs to win. Aiden Markram scored 136 runs, and Captain Temba Bavuma scored 66 runs. Everyone in the team contributed to win the match and the tournament!
What Happens Next?
The WTC reminds us that test cricket is still alive and very exciting.
The next WTC starts in 2025 and ends with another big final in 2027.
South Africa’s win shows that teamwork and practice can help you win big!
