The Shiveluch volcano erupted shortly after midnight, spreading an ash cloud over a large area. The cloud of ash buried towns in heaps of grey volcanic dust and caused a flight warning.</p><p>Lava flows erupted from the volcano, melting snow and causing a mudslide along a nearby highway. Towns were blanketed in grey ash up to 8.5 centimetres (3.5 inches), the deepest in 60 years. The ash cloud reached a height of 20 kilometres which caused ash to fall on surrounding settlements.</p><p>Researchers say that the volcano had been preparing to erupt for at least a year. According to Russian geologists, this quake was an aftershock of an earthquake that happened on 3rd April 2023. Around 3,00,000 people live in the Kamchatka peninsula.</p><p>Thankfully, there have been no initial reports of injuries. The Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) said that volcanic activity could affect international and low-flying aeroplanes. Several schools have been closed, and inhabitants have been told to remain indoors.</p><p>At least the power lines have been restored, and drinking water is being provided.</p><h5>What do we know about the Shiveluch volcano?</h5><p>Shiveluch is one of the most active volcanoes on the planet. It has repeatedly been erupting since 1999, though not always as fiercely as this week's explosion. Shiveluch has experienced an estimated 60 significant eruptions in the previous 10,000 years.</p><p>Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula extends southward into the North Pacific Ocean. It is one of the world's most densely populated volcanic locations. There are 160 volcanoes in the area, with 29 of them thought to be active at the moment.</p><p>Let us hope the volcanic eruption does not cause much damage to the people living in the area.</p>
