<h5>What is the history of International Women’s Day?</h5>  <p>During the early 1900s, there was a rise in women-led movements across the USA and Europe.  These movements demanded that women be given the right to vote, right to work, right to better pay, right to hold public office, etc. Women were finally beginning to take a firm stand against discrimination.</p>
<p>On March 8, 1913, women across Russia and Europe came together in the name of International Women’s Day to protest the ongoing wars and express solidarity with each other’s struggle. In 1917, on the same day, Russian women again staged a protest for ‘Bread and Peace’.</p>
<p>In 1975, the United Nations (UN) officially celebrated March 8 as International Women’s Day to commemorate its rich history. The UN member countries are trying to achieve gender equality and empower women through various resolutions like the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2015).</p> <h5>Why do we need to empower women?</h5> <figure>

      </figure> <p>In earlier times, there was a clear division of work between women and men. While women looked after the household, men were responsible for earning money. Initially, this arrangement worked well. However, soon, men came to acquire a lot more power over society. This is why most of our rulers and religious leaders in the past were men.</p>
<p>Under the rule of kings and the influence of priests, the divide between men and women became even more rigid. Without a father or a husband, it became impossible for women to survive. </p>
<p>This dependency on men led to the discrimination and exploitation of women. Men slowly became the decision-makers while women were not allowed to vote or own property or even complete higher education. </p>
<p>With time, human beings gained more knowledge about themselves and the world. We soon realised the need to treat every human being equally because we are all part of the same species. We may have differences, but that does not mean we should lead different lives altogether. </p>
<p>Every man and woman should have equal opportunities to grow and reach their best potential. The rules of society should be the same for men and women, and everyone should be treated with the same level of respect and kindness. To undo the injustice faced by women in the past, we need to empower them today.</p> <h5>What did we learn from this article?</h5>  <p>All women deserve the same rights and opportunities as men, such as good education, fair pay, the chance to be leaders, a safe environment, equal treatment, etc. </p>
<p>You can do your bit by being supportive of the women in your life, understanding their problems and worries, and raising your voice against people who mistreat women. </p>
