Argentina did not have a good start to the competition. They were defeated by Saudi Arabia in the first match. So, the Argentinian players received a lot of criticism. However, they trained hard and won their next games against Poland and Mexico to advance to the round of 16.
They won their match against Australia in this round to move on to the quarter-finals where they defeated the Netherlands. They reached the semi-finals, where they defeated Croatia, before facing France in the final.
In the final match, Argentina defeated France on penalties to win the World Cup. Argentina won the World Cup after 36 years. This is also their third FIFA World Cup trophy.

Football is a team game. All of the players must perform well for the team to win the game. So did the members of Argentina's national squad. That’s why they won the trophy. However, some team members did much better than others.
Lionel Messi received the Golden Ball for being the tournament’s best player. Argentina's Emiliano Martinez won the Golden Glove award for being the best goalkeeper in the competition. Enzo Fernandez of Argentina also won the award for the best young player.
