<h5>What is the digital arrest scam?</h5><p>Every day, we read of new methods that con artists use to cheat people. The digital arrest scam is one such method. In this scam, the criminals act as law enforcement officials and use various ways to convince people that their bank accounts, SIM cards, Aadhaar cards, etc., were used for illegal purposes.</p><p>The con artists then trick victims into believing that arrest warrants have been issued under their name. They then ask them to pay money by claiming that doing so will keep them from facing legal troubles.</p><p>There have been many cases across India where people have been cheated out of their money by these criminals.</p><h5>How does this scam work?</h5><p>Criminals use digital communication, such as video messages or phone conversations, to create a sense of panic in their victims. They even deceive them using fake proof, threatening language, etc. and warn them that they will be arrested. Generally, people get scared hearing such things.</p><p>Then they ask the individuals to transfer them money to avoid getting arrested. People are also generally asked not to talk about the issue with others. They even ask the victims not to leave their houses for a specific time, placing them under virtual house arrest.</p><p>The police said scam victims receive their first call from a fake low-ranking officer, like a police constable. Then, it is followed by an increasing order of high-ranking fake officials. This is done so that the victims think that the calls are authentic. The scammers also mislead individuals by using pictures of IPS officers on their WhatsApp and Truecaller IDs.</p><p>In some instances, the criminals created a false background that resembled a police station during the video chats. This was done to make the scam appear more real.</p><p>Let’s look at how some of these scam calls go.</p><p>Example situation - The victim gets a call from someone pretending to be a courier company’s customer support agent. This agent says that an illegal package sent using the victim’s name/ ID/ phone number has been caught by the police. The caller would then transfer the call to a fake police station where a fake cop would try to take money from the person in order to help prove them innocent.</p><h5>What should be done if someone receives such calls?</h5><p>Various state police are running campaigns to educate people against this scam. They also advise people to immediately contact the police and block these callers once they receive such a call.</p><p>When contacted by someone claiming to be a law enforcement officer, one must ask for their official credentials and contact information. Cross-questioning scammers can help, as they might be unable to answer the questions and cut the call.</p><p>A person must also contact the legal authorities through official communication methods to confirm the authenticity of any claims. One should also stay calm in such situations and not panic. People must also familiarise themselves with such scam cases to avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes.</p>
