<h5>What do we know about the bridge collapse?</h5>  <p>The collapse of a cable-suspension bridge in Morbi, Gujarat, is one of India’s worst public safety disasters in recent years. 135 people lost their lives in this accident (no one wants to hear such sad news). About 200 people are said to have been on the bridge across the Machchhu River when the accident happened on 30th October 2022.
The Morbi District Administration shared a short video clip that showed a large crowd of young men gathered on the bridge just before it collapsed. The video also showed that some of the men were shaking the bridge from side to side before it collapsed.
Survivors and witnesses described chaotic scenes from the deadly incident. The Morbi Suspension Bridge is 230 metres (755 feet) long and only 1.25 metres (4 feet) wide. It's been a popular tourist destination for many years. In April 2022, the bridge was closed for six months for renovations. Oreva, a company from Gujarat, was in charge of the maintenance.</p> <h5>What was the government’s response to this accident?</h5> <figure>

      </figure> <p>Hundreds of people from state and national disaster relief teams and the Indian military were conducting search and rescue operations. An investigation committee has been formed to look into the incident. 9 people have been arrested and are being investigated.</p>
<p>The Gujarat government also announced that they will pay Rs 4,00,000 to the families of those who died and Rs 50,000 to those who were injured. Free medical treatment will also be provided to them. The central government also announced that they will pay Rs 2,00,000 to the families of those who died and Rs 50,000 to the injured.</p>
<p>People from all across the nation and various world leaders have offered their condolences on this horrific incident.</p> <h5>What did the investigation team find?</h5> <figure>

      </figure> <p>The bridge would not have collapsed if the old cable holding it had been repaired. The bridge was allowed to open on October 26th 2022, without any official approval or without calculating the capacity of the bridge. Lifesaving equipment for lifeguards was also not available.</p>
<p>The team also said that the contractors who worked on repairing the bridge lacked proper training for the job. The bridge's flooring had been replaced, but the cables were not. So, the old cables couldn’t support the weight of the new flooring and thus collapsed.</p>
<p>Since the fatal incident, Oreva, the company that was in charge of the bridge’s maintenance, has been criticised a lot. However, they haven’t yet come up with any official statement. In short, a lot of negligent people were behind this deadly incident.</p> <h5>What did we learn from this article?</h5>  <p>There are no moral lessons that can be learned from death and destruction. We can only offer condolences to the families of the deceased. We wish the injured a speedy recovery. Let us all hope that a similar incident does not happen again in our country or the world.
