What do we know about the bridge collapse?
On 30th October 2022, a cable-suspension bridge in Morbi, Gujarat, collapsed. 135 people lost their lives in this accident. Around 200 people were on the bridge when it collapsed.
The Morbi District Administration shared a short video clip of a large crowd of young men gathered on the bridge just before it collapsed. For many years, this bridge has been a popular tourist destination.
In April 2022, the bridge was closed for six months for renovations. The maintenance was done by Oreva, a company located in Gujarat.
What was the government’s response to this accident?

Search and rescue operations were carried out by rescue teams. An investigation committee has been formed to look into the incident.
The Gujarat government will pay Rs 4,00,000 to the families of those killed and Rs 50,000 to those injured. They will also be given free medical care. The central government will also pay Rs 2,00,000 to the families of those who died and Rs 50,000 to those injured.
People from all over the country, as well as world leaders, have offered their condolences on this terrible incident.
What did the investigation team find?

The bridge would not have collapsed if the old cable that held it together had been repaired. Also, the bridge was allowed to open without any permission.
The team also said that the workers who repaired the bridge were not properly trained. The bridge's flooring had been replaced, but not the cables. So, the old cables could no longer support the weight of the new flooring and collapsed.
Oreva, the company that did the bridge's maintenance, has also been criticised a lot. In short, this deadly incident was caused by a large number of careless people.
