</h5>  <p>Most of us like playing video games. It’s fun and helps in getting rid of boredom. But, unlike other sports, there wasn’t much chance of playing video games in national-level tournaments (at least in India). This might change soon after the Indian government made certain changes.</p>
<p>The Indian government has officially recognised esports as a part of multi-sport events. This provides a significant boost for online gaming in India. Droupadi Murmu, India's President, modified the rules and instructed India's Department of Sports, part of India's Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, to serve as the country's governing body for esports.</p>
<p>The Indian government's inclusion of esports in the multi-sports category means that esports tournaments will officially be given the same status and importance as other sporting events in the country.</p>
<p>While gaming refers to playing any video game on any platform such as a computer, Xbox, PlayStation, etc., esports refers to competitive video gaming. This has gained popularity in recent years.

      </figure> <p>Esports has grown in popularity in India and around the world in recent years. The Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, England, included esports. Esports will also make its debut as a medal event at the postponed Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.</p>
<p>The International Olympic Committee (IOC) declared in November 2022 that the first Olympic Esports Week will be held in Singapore between 22nd June to 25th June 2023. The year 2022 was also an exciting year for Indian gamers. At the Commonwealth Esports Championship, the Indian Dota 2 team won a bronze medal (yay!).</p>
<p>The pandemic has accelerated the growth of the esports industry. During the lockdown, millions of people switched their attention to gaming to get rid of their boredom. Some even started playing professionally. Also, various gaming companies that make video games have opened offices in India.</p>
<p>Due to this, there has been an increase in the number of job opportunities. We have also seen an increase in the number of players from small Indian cities. A lot of these gamers are women who began playing during the lockdown and continued to do so once everything turned normal.
</p> <h5>What’s the future of esports in India?
</h5>  <p>The Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC) Promotion Task Force, which was formed earlier this year, has also submitted a report highlighting the opportunities in this sector. It has also recommended certain actions that the Government of India can take to improve the industry.</p>
<p>Esports being considered a medal sport in the Olympics and Asian Games, along with the new recognition received from the Indian government, will legitimize esports in the country. Gaming companies are also looking at ways to attract the Indian market and audience.

</h5>  <p>We learned that the government has recognised esports as a part of multi-sport events. In the near future, national-level esports tournaments can be organised in the country. That’s very good news for all video gamers. </p>
<p>This means that now, just like professional cricket, hockey, and other sports, you can also choose to play video games as a career. But keep in mind that your studies are still very important, even if you want to become a professional video gamer when you grow up.  </p>
