Who won the latest edition of the Ranji Trophy?

The Ranji Trophy is a popular Indian first-class cricket competition in which 38 teams participate. The final match of the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy ended on 19th February 2023. It was played between Saurashtra and West Bengal. Saurashtra won the match by 9 wickets and this is the second time that they have won this tournament.

Saurashtra’s captain Jaydev Unadkat took six wickets and the rest of the team played brilliantly well too.

What is the significance of the Ranji Trophy?

The Ranji competition was started in 1934. Mumbai is the most successful team in this tournament and has won the trophy 41 times (whoa!).

The Ranji tournament is important because it is the basis to select players for the Indian national cricket team. Many famous cricketers have started their careers by playing Ranji. If a cricketer performs really well in Ranji, there is a good chance of them getting selected for the Indian national team.

The format for the recent edition of the tournament was changed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The BCCI divided the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy into two groups - Elite and Plate. Instead of all 38 teams competing for the same prize, there were now two winners. The Elite group consisted of 32 teams divided into four groups, with the top two teams from each group reaching the quarter-finals.

The Plate group had 6 teams, and the top four went to the knockouts. They did not have to face any Elite teams. Instead, they played among themselves, and Bihar and Manipur reached the finals.

The two Plate finalists were promoted to the Elite group for the next tournament. The bottom 2 teams in the Elite group were relegated. Bihar won the Plate finals while Saurashtra won the final Ranji match in the Elite group.
